In this unit, students will examine the context of Lewis and Clark’s journey, discover the challenges they encountered, chart maps of the journey, discover the Native Indians they met along the way, and gain a deeper understanding of the journey’s challenges through the journals of Lewis and Clark. The students will be required to use technology to create projects demonstrating knowledge, post blogs documenting their progress, and develop social skills by participating in groups.

Example of Corps of Discovery Journal Entry - Patrick Gass

Winter 1803 - Recruited from Fort Kaskaskia in Illinois. Camped at Wood River in Illinois. Used my carpentry skills to help build the fort at Wood River and make modifications to the keelboat.

May 13, 1804 - Our journey begins tomorrow with Captain Merriwether Lewis and William Clark heading west toward the Pacific Ocean.

August 1804 - Elected to be one of the three sergeants of the expedition after Sgt. Floyd died.
